The surprising link between hearing loss and dementia

Audiologist Mesa AZ

As people age, both dementia and hearing loss become more common. Although many people experience both of these, not everyone realizes that research has discovered a link between hearing loss and dementia. In fact, preventing or treating hearing loss could even help to protect the brain as people age.

Studies have shown that hearing loss is linked to dementia

A study done by Johns Hopkins University followed a group of older people over 15 years. Researchers categorized the hearing loss of participants at the beginning of the study. Those with mild hearing loss were twice as likely to develop dementia as those of normal hearing. Even more striking, those with severe hearing loss were five times as likely to have dementia by the end of the study as those of normal hearing.

It’s worth noting that dementia sometimes affects the brain and causes hearing loss. However, because the hearing loss in these patients preceded the dementia, the study shows that hearing loss is a risk factor for dementia, rather than a symptom.

What could explain this link?

Researchers considered the possibility that other medical factors, such as having diabetes or high blood pressure, could be causing both dementia and hearing loss. However, these factors were not able to explain the association. Hearing loss appears to be an independent risk factor for dementia. The study is not definitive proof that hearing loss causes dementia, but it’s strongly suggestive.

Researchers believe that social interaction may be the key. Having hearing loss (especially if it’s untreated) tends to lead to social isolation, which is known to be a risk factor for dementia. Additionally, hearing loss causes a significant strain on the brain, as it attempts to analyze sounds using the inadequate information provided by the ears. This extra use of energy may actually lead to damage to the brain over time.
